A local observance of the 22nd Annual World AIDS Day will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Medford Congregational Church, 1801 East Jackson St., Medford.

The non-denominational evening of music and remembrance culminates in a candlelight ceremony conducted by Kurt Katzmar of the church.

Participants include OnTrack's Alan Collins AIDS Project, Beth Baker, Jennifer Schloming, Kurt Bernhart, Shawn Traub, The Rogue Valley Gay Men's Chorus, The Teen Theatre and Women With Wings.

Josh Tickell's Sundance Award-winning documentary "FUEL" will be premiered by the South Medford Biodiesel Club on Thursday March 12th at 6pm in the South Medford High School Little Theater. Following Southern Oregon's first screening of this groundbreaking movie, a panel of biofuels experts will answer audience questions. Josh Tickell is the author of the classic text "From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank", and has spent the last year producing a brand new look at the biofuel industry and how America can reach energy independence (thefuelfilm.com/). SMH Biodiesel Club, Rising Phoenix Biofuels and Rogue Biofuels will be sponsoring the event and the expert panel will also include Oregon's most sustainable biodiesel producers from Klamath Falls and Salem. Biodiesel is a completely biodegradable, non-toxic, fuel derived from plants. It is a great location, just 5 minutes outside of Talent and 15 minutes to Ashland. The large master bedroom has its own humble, but private, bathroom. Rent is $450 or $550 for a couple and is available immediately.

About us: We are spiritual and all that, but down to Earth. We don't drink, smoke or party. (Occasional glass of wine or whatever) Mostly we enjoy peace, quiet, yoga, meditation, hiking, and playing music. We intend to create a beautiful and abundant garden in the spring on this 2 acre plot. We lack the experience in gardening and permaculture and would love to find someone who has these areas as their passion and specialty.

The property has a 700 sq. ft. separate building we are currently remodeling into a space for yoga, meditation, music and gatherings, etc. We really want to live in community and share activities and we have a great space to create this.

Hi ya'll. I frequently run my computer till it steams in complaint. And i have a nice set of security options installed in my computer. But a few days back, i got infected with an "anti-spyware" program that was truly stupendous in its tenacity and sheer amount of impossible pop ups to deal with. Then it convinced my computer that it should distrust my control features.

This is where PURE GEEK comes in. The proprietor of Pure Geek came to my house personally and dealt with the problem. and it was not easy, but it was amazing to watch the battle between operator and virus. And i gotta say, my computer has never run smoother since, as well.
I know that Ashland fibernet is local, but this guy at pure geek, is really local. Local enouph to relate to common problems needed, but skillful enouph to take on the cylons from battlestar galactica! Marty at Pure Geek provides all the services you come to expect of a net provider, + a cheerful and truley helpful person behind the phone.

super excited to announce that...yes, silly heads...of course EMRG+N+SEE is happening this year. i get butterflies in my tummy just thinking about it. it's gunna be soooooo tight this time around-soooo much in store. it'll be our 6th birthday.

Mayor, councilors join about 200 locals in brainstorming

About 200 local residents came together Thursday night to brainstorm ways for Ashland to become more sustainable and to find out what efforts are already underway.

The Sustainable Community Leaders Dialogue at the Elks building downtown gave the public a chance to share ideas with each other and Mayor John Stromberg, several City Councilors and a number of city staff and members of city commissions. Stromberg took office this month after campaigning on a platform of sustainability.

Local author Jeff Golden said one of the simplest definitions of sustainability he's heard is to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

"What most people need is workable, real-world examples of other ways of doing things," he said.

Dominic Allamano, who helped organize the night's event, told audience members that they would not have to sit quietly and listen to experts, but would instead flesh out ideas with each other.

"You're what we need right now," he said before turning people loose to gather at tables in small groups.

Did anyone see the Meteor( or something) round 8:30 or 9pm flying northwest lastnight? T'was like a green ball--- close in, like a meteor without a tale....? We drove back above the reservoir to have a look, and saw the fires- thought it had crashed!!!! ~Wow
- We made the decision to call it in to 911- and was told it was some prescribed burns that had been burning all day.... Exciting anyway.

Just spreading the word that I'll be playing some of my new all-original music. I lived in Ashland for 7 years and really got my start playing electronic music here. Being in San Francisco has been wonderful, but it's SO good to be back in the bubbling lithia valley. I can't remember how long it's been since I've played here, but I'm really excited to drop the boom for anyone who wants to come out. Also appearing are Southern Oregon's own Jordan & Ru Sal.

I am working on a new segment for the Daily Tidings website. A few of you may remember our "Man on the Street" videos, we would post, where we take the video camera and ask locals their opinions about community 'goings ons'.

I'm taking over this assignment and sort of revamping it, calling it "Mandy on the Street". I have a lot of creative liberties, and I will have a new "Mandy on the Street" posted on the Tidings website weekly, which means I will need lots of ideas for questions to ask.

A great way to create a community without all the dogma is through Secular Solstice & Equinox Celebrations.

I think Freethinkers should challenge traditional religious holiday celebrations. Such as "Christmas" and "Easter" for example. There are perfectly valid and scientific reasons to celebrate the solstices and equinoxes. And especially the winter solstice and the spring equinox ... without any need for religious under pinnings at all. We do *NOT* need religion to celebrate these natural phenomena whatsoever.

Just thought I'd put the word out. Its been a rough year for local businesses and we need all your support for a local biodegredable recycled fuel for your diesel vehicles. Thanks for all those customers who got us through this year of price gouging. We only charge the bare minimum markup required to pay back our loan. We do not pay a single employee, owner, or manager. It's just a reminder of all the B.S. we've been through during the Bush years. Even if you don't like Michael Moore's movie.

I truly feel that Bush W. will go down as the worst President in US history and rightly so. I also feel that, while I can forgive the voters who voted for him in 2000, I cannot for give them for his re-election in 2004. Those voters who re-elected him should also be held accountable for their own horrible judgment & decision. Embarrassed?

Save Southern Oregon Old-Growth Forests Now!

Please take just a couple minutes to call or write the governor of Oregon today- he is the only person standing between the passing of this truly disastrous and sweeping assault on our public forests. If we can hold this off 'til Bush is out of office 100,000's of acres may be saved from the chainsaws!

The Bush Land Management Legacy

When the BLM released the WOPR (Western Oregon Plan Revision) draft plan in 2007, 30,000 members of the public commented; over 90% asked the BLM to save the remaining older forests, protect clean drinking water, and concentrate forest management on restoration and thinning small trees to protect communities from wildfire. The BLM ignored this common ground, common sense approach to forest management.

More of the Same

The final plan will: 1) remove BLM forests from the scientific framework of the Northwest Forest Plan; 2) ramp up clearcut logging across hundreds of thousands of acres; 3) remove streamside buffers that protect clean water and fish; and 4) log some of the last remaining older forests in western Oregon.

By The Numbers

The WOPR will increase logging by nearly 400% compared to current logging levels; get over 70% of the timber volume from clearcutting; shrink streamside reserves by 50%; add 180 million tons more carbon to the atmosphere compared to no logging (equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from 1 million cars driven for 132 years) and result in 1,300 miles of new roads.

The Final Plan outlines a destructive management strategy that KS Wild and our allies will continue to challenge, and we need your help. Under law, Governor Kulongoski is allowed a 60-day "consistency review" period that began last week. Governor Kulongoski is the only elected official standing between the Bush Administration and western Oregon's forests and salmon. It is imperative that the governor hears from you today! Let him know you appreciate these public lands - that you visit them, recreate in them and value them for the wildlife habitat, water and climate services they provide. If you live outside of the state, please join Oregonians in contacting Oregon's Governor and remind him that these are public forests - entrusted to the government to manage on behalf of all Americans.

This is a very unpopular proposal from a very unpopular administration in their 11th hour. Help us stop WOPR in its tracks!

Please contact Governor Kulongoski and ask that he help protect all of Oregon’s remaining public old-growth and not promote clearcutting on our public lands. Urge him to reject the WOPR and tell the BLM to come back with a plan that moves us forward in the forest.

Just prior to marking your ballots in late October, please join us for
a unique opportunity for citizen empowerment!

For three hours on two evenings -- the first night with Mayoral
candidates and the second night with City Council candidates --
citizens from Ashland will have chance to engage in a world cafe
dialogue about the issues they care most about. No one has set the
agenda in advance The questions people have and the topics people want
to talk will emerge from the process (the conveners are simply
responsible for creating a safe, welcoming, neutral space for
authentic, civil conversation) . Candidates join citizens as neighbors
in conversation at the cafe tables for the first half of the evening.
During the second half, candidates form a small council, ground rules
of listening and respectful inquiry are established, and people get a
chance to listen to candidates talk about the issues they've heard.

These two dialogues with candidates emerge from a series of open,
informal gatherings called the Sustainable Community Leaders Dialogue
held on a monthly basis since May at the Ashland Public Library. This
dialogue series has been intended to weave together various sectors of
the community such that participants can begin to envision "whole
system"/transpartis an solutions to the sustainability challenges
facing our community. The dialogue has been organized around a 12
sector wheel. In the wheel every area of social need and activity is
encompassed — energy, food, water, security, communications, arts,
culture, spirituality, etc. By arranging the sectors according to a
wheel allows for a "hub" in the middle to serve as a connecting point
between sectors. Sustainable solutions are found when ideas and
projects begin linking-up across sectors.

In the spirit of learning, inquiry, reconciliation and integration,
our informal host committee looks forward to welcoming you to this
important set of community dialogues.

Come and Celebrate Sustainable Living and Community! The Wellness Guide
directory will host The Harmony Harvest Faire: Festival of
Sustainability on Saturday, October 4th. The free faire provides a
forum for community discussions on localization and sustainability, as
well as a music-filled harvest celebration abundant with live
performances, dancing, seed sharing, booths, children’s activities, and
luscious local foods! The event features dynamic public dialogues on
building local sustainability and presentations by many of the region’s
leading innovators. The keynote of the event is the introduction of
The Transition Town Initiative, community-powered development of local
resilience to deal with the rapid changes in economy, climate, and
availability of affordable oil. Transition Town Initiatives are
building lasting sustainability in over 600 towns internationally and
are now being formally launched for the first time in the US.

The Harmony Harvest Faire will 11am-9pm at The Bellview Grange, 1050
Tolman Creek Road, Ashland. Admission is free and produce donations for
the Wellness Guide’s 2nd Annual Locally Grown Food Drive are
encouraged. The public is also invited to bring garden seeds for the
community seed share. Organic gourmet meals and desserts will be
available throughout the day, provided by Andy Sarhanis and Ajna. The
festival culminates with an All-Ages Dance from 5-9pm, with exquisite
music by Asesu Drummers (Cuban Santeria), Hari (World and Caribbean),
Jen Ambrose (potent folk), and other treats. Daytime music offers a
diversity of acoustic delights, from old-time Bluegrass to classical
Indian flute, original singer/song- writers to Ashland High School
Orchestral ensembles. The Faire’s Kid’s Corner will offer Nature Arts
and Grandma Amma’s Storytelling in a cozy family setting. Community
networking boards will be posted on a dozen themes, supporting
individuals and organizations in sharing information.

Vending booths and tabling space are available for holistic
practitioners, green business, artists, and organizations. Volunteers
are needed for both the October 4th Faire and for The Locally Grown
Food Drive (Sept.27th- Oct.4th ).

The theme of the Harmony Harvest Faire is Celebrating and Catalyzing
Community Sustainability. “At this time in history we have the
opportunity, responsibility, and necessity to develop a more
sustainable way of living. When we come together as a community we are
far better equipped and empowered to deal with any challenges we
face.” Lisa Pavati, Wellness Guide publisher. The Wellness Guide and
The Thrivability Institute will be hosting monthly public Transition
Town discussions with community action planning sessions. The
Wellness Guide hosts an ongoing program of Sustainable Living

whats up ashland, i am lucky enough to volunteer for earthdance this year and i need a ride that will arrive at the hog farm in time for the volunteer meeting on thursday night. i definitely have gas money and a driver license if you want to switch off driving. i am extremely tolerant unless you are abusive or a tweaker, which is highly unlikely for the earthdance crowd. :)

"Where’s the Medicine?

Too many sick and disabled patients are without medicine. Initiative Petition 28 will allow for licensed and regulated medical marijuana dispensaries and establish a program designed to ensure that patients in need have an adequate supply of medicine. The proposal will also generate revenue for the state and fund research.

Currently, there are four ways for patients to obtain medical marijuana:

1. Grow your own
2. Designate a grower
3. Buy on the black market
4. Have medicine donated from another patient

Voter Power’s vision: More freedom, more choices, help patients in need

Our proposal, Initiative 28, creates a revenue-generating regulated medical marijuana supply system that increases choices and freedom for patients (while not taking away the choices currently available). Patient Resource Centers (PRCs) and dispensaries would be able to dispense medicine, plants and products to patients, providing patients with products and services that aren’t normally available, such as edibles, tinctures and lozenges. PRCs would provide patients with numerous choices of strains and products while also providing socializing and networking opportunities. Producers would be able to sell to dispensaries and PRCs and donate to cardholders, helping keep prices low. 10% of all gross revenue would go back into the OMMP. The money generated from the system would allow for scientific research and provide a comprehensive plan to assist Oregon patients battling poverty, disease, and disability.

Andy Langford and Liora Adler have spent the last 35 years working to create projects and tools to address the personal, social, and global transformation of our times.

Andy brought Permaculture to the UK in 1986 and initiated the Permaculture Association of Britain, as well as the Permaculture Diploma WorkNet upon which the design of Gaia University is based. He has been active in the European permaculture and ecovillage networks, is a member of the European Permaculture Council and has served on the European Council of the Global Ecovillage Network.

Liora has focused on the human architecture underlying ecovillages and other social change groups. My partner and I are going to Burning Man this year but, having two kids and being pregnant, she hasn't gotten her ticket yet.

Community Dialogs at Peace Village Festival

Greetings Tribe,

I will be hosting a series of six community dialogs at the Peace Village Festival this weekend, with three dialogs held Saturday and Sunday from noon until 6pm in the Casbah Tent. Tej Steiner, Crystal Arnold, Robin Noll and Jeff Golden will be hosting specific sessions during the weekend as well.

The sessions will each be uniquely designed utilizing elements of Heart Circle, World Cafe, Open Space and other dialog formats which empower collective intelligence and wisdom to emerge.

The design emphasis and intention of the dialogue series is to build the social soils - the capacity of our community to create and sustain healthy culture together - by encouraging the creation of diverse and generative relationships amongst participants while exploring questions meaningful and relevant to our lives. From these soils will emerge our harvest of community insight and wisdom.

I invite your presence and participation in any or all of these dialogues. They will be an collective expression of those who are present. I would be delighted if you were one of them!

Local Business Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company to Close Doors

The Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company, located in Ashland at 2220 Ashland Street, is very sad to announce that it will be closing, after only eight and a half years in business in the Rogue Valley. Heartsong is an herbal micro-brewery, providing hand-crafted chai and their unique Pepper Brew beverages from Chico, CA to Seattle, WA, and employs local residents and youth.

Heartsong Chai began in Ashland, in 2000, brewing chai, a spicy tea, at night in Evo’s Java House. It was met with great fanfare by the Ashland community and one of the original founders decided to make a real business of it. Elizabeth Bretko, known to countless as the “Chai Mama,” bought a house in Jacksonville and converted her 12x13 square-foot detached garage into a certified commercial kitchen.

In 2003, Heartsong Pepper Brews were developed. Beginning with the Habanero Honey Brew, a kind spicy lemonade sweetened with local honey from the Wild Bee Honey Farm in White City or Queen Bee Apiaries in Corvallis, offered as an all-natural alternative to caffeine energy drinks. The concept is that hot peppers provide an endorphin rush, giving a person energy without the caffeine crash.

In 2004, Heartsong then began doing business as the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company. Chad Derosier, known to many as “The Chai Guy,” joined Heartsong and helped to make the business grow, securing distribution in Eugene and then shortly after in Portland. The Habanero Honey Brew, and second Pepper Brew, Thai Dragon Tonic, proved to be a success and demand quickly outgrew the rate of production that only two people could do from such a small space. It was time grow and build their own brewery.

In the spring of 2006, Heartsong signed a lease to take over an abandoned Pizza Hut building, remodeling it and naming it the Chai Hut “A Food Artisan’s Gallery and Café.” They purchased two large kettles, a boiler, a 4-head filling machine, a capper and a labeling machine, allowing them the ability to produce 325 gallons per batch. They introduced a third Pepper Brew, the Mate Fire, purchasing yerba mate from locally owned Eco Teas and they hired several local people.

Heartsong began to grow rapidly, securing large-ticket accounts like New Seasons Markets in Portland, and PCC Markets in Seattle, WA and a few Whole Foods stores. At this point, while having grown the company grass-roots with very little investment, bills began to pile up as sales still did not meet the new overhead costs.

Through over a year of seeking investment from various individuals, groups and companies, Heartsong came up dry. Deep conversations were had with the local Daedalus Foundation but the relationship went sour and they left Heartsong out in the cold. Last week, Heartsong made the decision to close the operation of their business, a difficult decision when the factory is newly launched and sales are growing.

On August first, the Chai Hut will close the doors for their café operations. If people would still like to purchase “Love Jugs,” 64-ounce glass bottles of their chai or Pepper Brews, or chai spice blend boxes the Chai Hut will remain open on Thursdays through September for the Siskiyou Sustainable Cooperative CSA pick-up.
